The municipality has a population of 4,251 (2011) while the town itself is inhabited by 3,771 people, making it the largest settlement on the island of Hvar.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Census_2011_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hvar_(town)#cite_note-Census_2011-3\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>3<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> It is situated on a bay in the south coast of the island, opposite from the other nearby towns of <a title=\"Stari Grad, Croatia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stari_Grad,_Croatia\">Stari Grad<\/a> and <a title=\"Jelsa, Croatia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jelsa,_Croatia\">Jelsa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/frenchbychoice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/caption.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-8165\" src=\"http:\/\/frenchbychoice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/caption-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/frenchbychoice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/caption-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/frenchbychoice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/caption-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/frenchbychoice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/caption-200x200.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>The town of Hvar has a long and distinguished history as a center for trade and culture in the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Adriatic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adriatic\">Adriatic<\/a>. A commune, part of the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Venetian Empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Venetian_Empire\">Venetian Empire<\/a> during the 13th to 18th centuries, it was an important naval base with a strong fortress above, encircling the town walls and protecting the port.<sup id=\"cite_ref-novak_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hvar_(town)#cite_note-novak-4\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>4<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> Cultural life thrived as prosperity grew, and Hvar is the site of one of the oldest surviving theatres in Europe, which opened in 1612.<sup id=\"cite_ref-histplaces_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hvar_(town)#cite_note-histplaces-5\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>5<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> The seven-hundred-year-old walls still survive, as do many noble houses and public buildings from the 15th \u2013 17th centuries.<\/p>\n<p>By the 19th century, the port of Hvar was no longer a military base, and The Hygienic Society of Hvar (Higijeni\u010dko dru\u0161tvo u Hvaru), celebrating 150 years in 2018 <sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hvar_(town)#cite_note-6\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>6<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> took the economy of the town and the island in a new direction. As one of Europe&#8217;s earliest &#8220;tourist boards,&#8221; it was founded in 1868 to provide &#8220;good care for visitors.&#8221; Today, the town has a variety of hotels, galleries, museums, and exhibitions, including the <a title=\"Hvar Arsenal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hvar_Arsenal\">Arsenal<\/a>, Loggia, the Croatian Institute, and the Hvar Heritage Museum with its art and archaeological collections.<sup id=\"cite_ref-hvartz_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hvar_(town)#cite_note-hvartz-7\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>7<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The port of Hvar, set in a picturesque natural bay, with the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Pakleni islands\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pakleni_islands\">Pakleni Otoci<\/a> island chain protecting it to the south, is a haven for boats year-round. The town is a standard port of call for yachts sailing around the Adriatic, especially in summer.
