Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667, Dubrovnik managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. Damaged again in the 1990s by armed conflict, it is now the focus of a major restoration programme co-ordinated by UNESCO<\/p>\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\"><strong>Dubrovnik<\/strong>, port of <a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Dalmatia\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Dalmatia<\/a>, southeastern <a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Croatia\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Croatia<\/a>. The port\u2019s sea fortifications rise directly from the <a class=\"md-crosslink autoxref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/water\" data-show-preview=\"true\">water\u2019s<\/a> edge, and the massive round tower (completed 1464) of the Minc\u0306eta Fortress dominates the city on the landward side. The old city of Dubrovnik was designated a <a class=\"md-crosslink autoxref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/UNESCO\" data-show-preview=\"true\">UNESCO<\/a><span id=\"ref893219\"><\/span><a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/World-Heritage-site\" data-show-preview=\"true\">World Heritage site<\/a> in 1979.
