{"id":951,"date":"2012-03-06T13:13:32","date_gmt":"2012-03-06T18:13:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/frenchbychoice.com\/?p=951"},"modified":"2012-03-11T17:50:56","modified_gmt":"2012-03-11T21:50:56","slug":"kitchen-supplies-in-paris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/frenchbychoice.com\/?p=951","title":{"rendered":"Kitchen Supplies and Cooking in Paris"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each time we come to Paris we visit the kitchen suppliers who are huddled in the Las Halles area of Paris. \u00c2\u00a0Le Halles used to be the &#8220;Belly of Paris&#8221; a term made famous by Emile Lola in his book titled <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Belly of Paris.<\/span>\u00c2\u00a0Unfortunately the &#8220;belly&#8221; no longer exists in it&#8217;s former form and the suppliers of meat, fish and vegetables have moved outside Paris to <a title=\"History of Paris food\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rungismarket.com\/en\/rouge\/historique\/index.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Rungis<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0The Rungis wholesale market officially opened on 3 march 1969, and has been growing ever since.<br \/>\nThere are tours of the market, however, this person, tried as he may, has never been able to successfully book a reasonable priced tour of the market. \u00c2\u00a0So if you are up to it try booking a tour; they range form an affordable 89\u00e2\u201a\u00ac to 300\u00e2\u201a\u00ac.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-952\" title=\"rungis\" src=\"http:\/\/frenchbychoice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/rungis-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The good news is the kitchen shops have remained in Les Halles and no trip to Paris for a foodie would be complete without a visit to one or all of the shops.<\/p>\n<p><em>(See list of US Suppliers at the end of this post)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The most well known and jewel in the crown is E. Dehillerin. \u00c2\u00a0Opened in 1820 they are know for this copper pots and molds. The quality is excellent and the prices reasonable. \u00c2\u00a0If you&#8217;ve been to A Simon recently you may have noticed <a href=\"http:\/\/frenchbychoice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/IMG_1681.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-960\" title=\"A. Well I did some reconnaissance on a recent visit and found out that there has been a change in ownership and that the new owners of A Simon are G. DETOU!! That&#8217;s right, the fabulous culinary specialty shop around the corner has extended its domain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>G. Especially with its collection of large-sized cooking supplies \u00e2\u20ac\u201d bags of Valrhona chocolate powder, packets of 50 vanilla beans, and smaller gift items of unusual jams, honeys, spices, grains and every kind of dried mushroom. Planning on making those violet macaroons when returning the the USA, better pick up a bottle of purple food coloring. \u00c2\u00a0This is also a great spot for you geeks interested in Molecular Gastronomy, for they have a good supply of chemicals needed for the process.
