Rainy Days and Fridays

Farmington At our “natural” mooring, we had multiple rain showers in the morning.  We had a later morning “brunch” so to speak, of poached eggs or scrambled eggs a la Mike-y.  When the showers broke, we untied from our trees and headed downstream to Douelle.

Sunny Skies Turn to Showers

We left our “natural” mooring tied to the tree under overcast skies about 10:03 AM back downstream toward Cahors/Douelle.  At 11:30 AM, we visited Laroque-des-Arcs, passing by the Chapelle St-Roch, perched up above the town on a hillside.  Town was supposed to have a boulangerie (now closed and for sale), water to refill our water tank, and a little alimentarie.   Continue reading

Upstream to St-Cirq-Lapopie and Back Downstream

We left Bouzies with a mist over the river and a cool, comfortable morning about 8:30 AM.  Our first lock, right after Bouzies, was called the Ganil lock, which has a towpath along the river cut out of the stone.   Continue reading

Vers and Bouzies

We woke up early, Shoe and Lou walked into town to the bakery for fresh bread and croissants.  The bread was baked in a wood-fired oven.  It was not as cool as yesterday and we set off early about 8:45 AM toward Vers.  Through 2 locks, then we arrived at Vers, where we strolled through the old town,   Continue reading

Shopping in Cahors and a Leisurely Sail to Arcambal

After spending the night at Cabessut, just upstream and across the Lot River from Cahors, we awoke to 42 degree weather.

Our boat tied up at Port Bullier

We backtracked to Port Bullier to moor while we walked around town and picked up some items we had forgotten.

We walked through the filthiest alleyway ever in France as the quickest route from Port Bullier to Rue Gambetta (we called the pigeon toilette). Once we made out way past the disgusting impasse, we saw half-timbered houses with brick overhangs, decorated courtyards, and houses with carved facades typical of the Renaissance (featuring rose, suns, branches, etc.)

Through the locks to Cahors

We woke to a mist over the River Lot after an overnight at about KM 135.

Off our stern, motoring up the Lot River

The sun over the vineyard was gorgeous and the mist barely there when we pulled away from our anchorage at 10:15 AM.  We leisurely motored past the village of Parnac, two old abandoned lock systems, past the Chateau de Langle, cliffs, and vineyards back to Douelle.   Continue reading

From Wheels to Float

We left Simon and Hilary with great regret; their hospitality and warmth, as well as, their friendship made our stay in PuyCalvel a very special one, but it is on to our next adventure aboard our boat on the Lot River.  Suitcases back on top of the car, everything we could manage to take stuffed in the car and off to Douelle.   Continue reading

Our Last Day with Wheels: Gramat, Autoire, Loubressac, and Castlenau Bretenoux

On our last day before we check in our car, we took Simon’s advice and routed a loop northwest to include Gramat, Autoire, Loubressac, and Castelnau-Bretenoux.  Frances, our GPS, took us over two-lane roads this time – at least as far as Gramat, a cute little town nestled in the countryside.   Continue reading

Jardins d’Eyrignes Loop

After a quick phone call to our mechanic about the tire which we learned would be ready at 11 AM, we set out under cloudy skies north/northwest to Jardins d’Eyrignes via Souillac. The gardens have been in the family since the 1600’s.  At one point, they fell into disrepair and their restoration and expansion have been the labor of love for over 40 years.   Continue reading

An Adventure

Another bright, clear day in the Dordogne! Hung clothes on the line to dry in the fresh air! Headed out to the weekly market in Cahors! We found figs, peaches, pears, strawberries – which we had a choice grown in the woods or in the garden. Continue reading
